LEADING MAN TRAVIS BALCKE FOR WELLA PROFESSIONALS
LOOK TO LOVE ROMANTICALLY SWEPT AWAY
Designer Akira Isogawa revisited the archive collection to celebrate 20 years of Australian Fashion Week focussing on romance. “We wanted the style of hair to create a nostalgic feel but at the same time, update and reinvent romance.”
Add a little romance into your life through this dreamy and angelic style. Start by blow drying the hair in different directions to crate volume and texture. Section hair from ear to ear, over the crown. Create a high pony with the lower half and turn it into a bun. Backcomb the top half of hair to create fullness over the bun and creating a graphic style and hiding the ends by tucking in around and under the bun.
STYLE NOTE Finally, something other than muted tones on the catwalk! Our eyes can hardly believe it – but we are loving it. Pinks, yellows and of course the colour of love, red, were featured on flowing styles that billowed behind the models are they graced their way down the catwalk.
WHO KATE SYLVESTER
WHERE THE RUNWAY
LEADING MAN RICHARD KAVANAGH FOR REDKEN
LOOK TO LOVE ROMANTIC TOUGH LUXE
Inspired by the 90s and Romeo and Juliet (awww) Richard Kavanagh described the two looks for Kate Sylvester as “fresh and youthful”. For the tough luxe style, mist Redken Rootful 06 Root lifting Spray from roots to ends on fry hair. Blow-dry hair off the face and apply their Rough Paste 12 Working Material through the top and side sections of hair to create texture and control. Finish with Forceful 23 Super Strength Hairspray for lasting hold.
The romantic style was created by applying 2-3 drops of Redken Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine onto clean, towel dried hair. Follow with Pillow Proof Blow Day Express Primer spraying them roots to ends. Blow-dry with a large round brush to polish the hair texture. Create a centre part and twist the sides back and pin at the nape with two barrettes. Finish with Fashion Works 12 Versatile Working Spray Control.
STYLE NOTE The collection was an eclectic mix of styles which included polka dots, stripes, lace, leather, floral and shoulder straps- kind of like a bag of mixed lollies, totally varied… but sweet nonetheless!
WHO STEVEN KHALIL
WHERE THE THEATRE
LEADING LADY SHARON BLAIN FOR GOLDWELL
LOOK TO LOVE THE MODERN CHIGNON
Hair Director Sharon Blain took a nod from Steven’s chic couture designs by creating an intricate style which had a classic simplicity to it. “The idea for this hair look evolved from looking at the gowns, the fabrics, their textures and also the embellishments,” Sharon Blain said.
The key element to this enviably elegant style is the cornrow running down the back of the head. To replicate it start by running StyleSign Diamond Gloss through the hair for a high shine finish. Work a three strand scalp braid in a 5cm panel down the centre of the forehead down to the back at the nape and secure with a small band to hold. The braid can be lightly roughed for texture, however tightness needs to be maintained for elegance.
STYLE NOTE Steven Khalil never fails to impress us with his show stoppingly elegant and classy designs. What can you take away from these designs? Timeless and classy will never go out of style, and a little bit of embellishment goes a long way in livening up a garment.
WHO BONDI BATHER
WHERE THE BOX
LEADING MAN PHILIP BARWICK AND COLORIST KRISTINA RUSSELL FOR REDKEN
LOOK TO LOVE PLAYFUL PONY
Phillip Barwick created a playful, show-stopping high ponytail for Bondi Bather. Inspired by a confident Harajuku mood “the youthful look created is athletic, playful and confident,” he reveals. Hair directive showcased punked up pink highlights created with Redken’s Color Rebel temporary hair makeup.
On dry hair, mist Redken’s Rootful 06 Root Lifting Spray directly onto the roots. Blow-dry all sections of hair upwards towards the crown, and apply their Fashion Work 12 Versatile Working Hairspray to all sections of the hair and brush up to create a high ponytail.
Accessorise the pony with a metallic latex wrap, and highlight strands of the ponytail with Color Rebel Punked Up Pink to create a playful, ombre effect. Finish with a spray of Forceful 23 Super Strength Hairspray for ultimate and frizz-free shine.
STYLE NOTE The funky fresh Bondi Bather reflected Aussie beaches with their yellow and blue tones, accompanied by burnt orange sunset hues. Featuring their signature cuts, metallic fabrics and out there prints, models were accessorised with glowing golden tans and Ugg boots. Nothing says defying winter like popping on a psychedelic pair of woollen boots.
WHO JENNIFER KATE
LEADING LADY MARIE CAIN FOR GOLDWELL
LOOK TO LOVE STRUCTURAL SOFTNESS
“The texture of this look is the most important element as it must be a very pliable texture and matte finish, easy to create flyways. I feel this style compliments Jennifer Kates collection well, it adds a somewhat dreamy feel, especially when you get all that movement as the models walk the flyways seem to float through the air, much like the movement of the confetti on the floor.”
Want Jennifer’s top tips for achieving this look? Apply Goldwell’s StyleSign Hot Form styling lotion to thick hair, and StyleSign Double Boost root lift spray to fine hair form roots to ends. Blast dry and mist the same product lightly through with a round brush. Generously spray hair throughout with dry shampoo to catch flyways, and build chalky texture.
STYLE NOTE Midriffs and muted tones, peppered with a few red garments, were the focus of Jennifer Kate’s collection. Basic shapes stole the show at Jennifer Kate, and gave her collection that effortlessly chic look.
WHO THE INNOVATORS FASHION DESIGN STUDIO
WHERE THE BOX
LEADING MAN JON PULITANO OF HEADCASE HAIR FOR REDKEN
LOOK TO LOVE THE FUTURISTIC POWER BUN
“The arresting look that I created for the Innovators Group Show was anchored by a strong and super-sleek, exaggerated bun,” said Jon Pulitano. This futuristic bun, with its impacting style, isn’t for the faint hearted but if you’re feeling brave Jon gave us his top tips for creating this edgy look.
Begin by creating a pony tail. Take sections of the ponytail and use hairspray to control and remove fly-aways. Wrap the section around the base of ponytail and secure the ends with a strong hold hairspray. Repeat this until the entire ponytail is wrapped and secured. Finish off the look with a generous spritz hairspray.
STYLE NOTE Each designer featured something vastly different with innovative techniques and materials used, showing the world what they are capable of. There were baseball tees, double denim, sheer plastic dresses, leather and suede cape, neoprene gowns, box tops and oversized bomber jackets. When it comes to innovation, anything goes.
WHO BIANCA SPENDER
WHERE THE THEATRE
LEADING LADY MICHELLE MCQUILLAN FOR O&M
LOOK TO LOVE NONCHELANT NINETIES KNOTS
It’s a dream shared by many a young girl – making it as a world renowned ballerina. Whilst this career path may have slipped by (we hate to burst your bubble!), Michelle McQuillan has created a wispy knot inspired by the movement of ballet dancers… Fake it ’til you make it, right?
Start by applying a volumiser to the roots, then brush into a pony tail and secure just below the crown. Spritz ponytail with O&M Surf Bomb, and back comb sections of hair to create a rougher texture. Pull hair into a messy knot, leaving the ends sticking out and pull a few hair out around the face for the wispy look.
STYLE NOTE A great fitting garment does wonders for the body, and Bianca Spencer’s AW15 collection of loose fitted styles exuded elegance. The colour palate followed the monochromatic trend, with a touch of shell pink to spice up the monochrome tones.
WHERE THE BOX
LEADING MAN CLIVE ALLWRIGHT FOR KMS CALIFORNIA
LOOK TO LOVE EMBELLISHED STRUCTURE
Inspired by elegant simplicity, the sleek hairstyling featured clean lines and shine for a look that was ultimately all about healthy and elegant hair. Hair accessories were incorporated to create maximum runway impact… who doesn’t love a bauble or ten?
Start by applying volume foam to the roots and blow dry smooth. Straightening the hair until it is completely straight, take two parallel sections from the temples to the nape of neck and clip to the side. Secure a pony tail to the crown with the middle section, attach hair accessory and make a large knot.
STYLE NOTE The garments showcased designer Krystel Davis’ talent for fusing delicate embroideries with light-weight fabrics. Feminine and floaty were the key aesthetics of the Ixiah collection, complimenting the elegant simplicity of the hair.
WHO MANNING CARTELL
LEADING MAN DALE DELAPORTE FOR PREMA AND GOLDWELL
LOOK TO LOVE SPORTS LUXE GLAMOUR
Sports luxe has made its way to the forefront of fashion, and we’re loving it’s prevalence in Fashion Week’s hairstyling. For the label’s tenth anniversary there was an air of sexiness mixed with a hint of retro glam – a nod to the quintessential Manning Cartell women. “The beauty of this look is that depends on the angle you see it to which part grabs your attention. From the front of course, it’s all about that fringe – heavy, unbroken and uber sexy,” Dale Delaporte said.
To achieve this statement fringe, apply a small amount of Goldwell StyleSign Roughman to the very top layer of the fringe area to maintain a solid, and smooth surface. Using a very fine bristle brush shape the fringe to sit forward, skimming the bridge of the nose to then cover the right eye. Occasionally mist with StyleSign Magic Finish over the top to help grip the brush and keep the desired shape. Tuck fringe behind the ear, secure and voila! Manning Cartell glamour is yours for the taking!
STYLE NOTE Sophisticated prints made a big splash in this collection. With nary a novelty print in sight, the designs showcased kept it grown up yet playful – perfect for ensuring that you remain chic for the season ahead.
WHO WANG YUTO
WHERE THE THEATRE
LEADING MAN PHILIP BARWICK FOR REDKEN
LOOK TO LOVE Dishevelled glamour
Phillip Barwick created a loose 60s-inspired hair directive with a sweeping dishevelled texture.
Start by applying Rootful 06 Root Lifting Spray onto dry hair and create a low side-part and blow-dry hair until completely dry. Create random bends throughout the hair with a large curling tong. Sweep the main section of hair across the face and pin at the side, above the ear. Apply Wind Blown 05 Dry Finishing Spray to create weightless volume and an airy textured, dishevelled effect. Spray with Forceful 23 Super Strength Hairspray for hold to finish.
STYLE NOTE Beautiful, like a sunrise the collection by Wang Yuto featured glamorous styles featuring both fitted and box styles. Solid blocks of yellow, orange and green were incorporated into more muted tones of black and white – we are loving seeing a bit of colour brighten up the catwalk!
WHO SWIM DESIGNER SHOWCASE
WHERE THE RUNWAY
LEADING LADY PALOMA ROSE GARCIA FOR REDKEN
LOOK TO LOVE RIVIERA CHIC
Imagine a luxurious summer spent sunning yourself on a yacht, idly floating through the Riviera (perhaps with a flute of bubbles in hand… or is that just us?). This was the inspiration behind Paloma Rose Garcia’s looks created for the Swim Designer Showcase.
“The high-end, polished look that I created for the GROUP SWIM Show was inspired by luxurious Riviera escapades,” explains Pamona of her hair direction. Redken’s GUTS 10 provided flexible fullness and FORCEFUL 23 fixed the look with ultimate hold and frizz-free lustre.”
Can’t get away from the office? Never fear, at least you can look like you’re preparing for a sundrenched vacation! Start with damp hair, and generously apply GUTS 10 Volume Spray Foam to the mid-lengths and ends. Blow-dry with a round brush until completely dry to ensure a smooth result – also ensure that the sides and crown section are blow-dried directionally, away from the face. Apply FORCEFUL 23 Super Strength Hairspray to the sides and crown section, and blow-dry back for extra hold. Shift focus to the mid-lengths and ends of hair and begin wrapping sections into a 1.5” curling tong for seven seconds to create bend. Brush hair with a cushioned brush to refine and polish the look, then hairspray to finish your gleaming look.
STYLE NOTE Prints, prints and more prints marched down the runway! Be it a cut out swimsuit, a good ol’ string bikini or conservative one piece… Marrakech-inspired printing stole the show!
WHERE THE BOX
LEADING LADY IDA TIRIMACCO FOR GOLDWELL
LOOK TO LOVE GOLDWELL’S GLAMOUR CURLS
Hair Director Ida Tirimacco took the lady-like glamour from the Galanni collection, and workshopped a sophisticated and elegant hair look for the show. “With the structured components of the gown, we decided to go for a softer, sexier and more fresh hair look to in the hair,” she explains. We wanted to maintain the femininity and glamour of the range, but maintain some movement in the hair.”
The secret to these perfect curls is alternating the directions of each row of curls and pinning to cool. Spray Goldwell’s StyleSign Big Finish all over to set the curls. Once hair has completely cooled, start un-pinning and allow hair to fall and relax then run a couple of drops of StyleSign Melting Diamonds through the ends before brushing section by section with a Mason Pearson brush. For the glamour gloss finish spray with StyleSign Magic Finish.
STYLE NOTE The couture label has once again wowed the crowds with their structured, sophisticated and endlessly elegant gowns. Celebrating the female silhouette these beauties made serious catwalk impact, especially with the gold embellishments glittering in the light.
