SUNDAY APRIL 12 2015

WHO  MERCEDES BENZ PRESENTS ELLERY

WHERE THE RUNWAY

LEADING LADY MICHELE MCQUILAN FOR REDKEN

LOOK TO LOVE PONY UP!

“Anchored by a nonchalant mood, a classic low ponytail was created with a soft middle part.”

Texture, texture, read all about it! This nonchalant look is all about hairs natural movement with added texture. For tousled, just stepped out of the ocean carefree look, Fashion Waves 07 Texturizing Sea Spray will give you summer beach hair without having to step foot in the ocean.

STYLE NOTE Keeping true to Ellery’s exquisitely honed emphasis on high quality fabrics and impeccable tailoring, the predominantly monochrome palette presented to fashion’s front row (less a pop or two of powder blue to spice things up) was standout in itself at Ellery’s MBFWA 15 effort.

Note to self. Sticking to a monochromatic palette will keep us looking black, white and rad all over.

MONDAY APRIL 13 2015

WHO TOME

WHERE THE RUNWAY

LEADING MAN JON PULITANO FOR REDKEN

LOOK TO LOVE RETRO GRUNGE

Showcasing a sleek and polished side part with a natural fall, Jon fused 50’s glamour with a definitive street vibe for Tome’s runway. To get the look apply Redken 06 Root Lifting Spray to the sides and crown of the head, and create a low side part before combing hair back tightly. Using pin curl clips, secure side and crown sections and layer with super strength hairspray to hold. Use a diffuser to achieve a fixed, hard texture. To finish off the Tome inspired ‘do, apply Redken All Soft Argan 6 Oil liberally through the back section of hair to smooth flyways whilst maintaining a light and natural texture.

STYLE NOTE  Team TOME stayed true to their signatures this season, with classic shapes bought to life with strong fabrics and colours. culture‘s top takeaway look from the runway? Box on! That’s right, take tips from TOME and embrace a boxier silhouette – be it arm, trouser or calf-length vest.

WHO ASHKAR LINE

WHERE THE BOX

LEADING MAN JAMES NICHOLSON FOR KEVIN MURPHY

LOOK TO LOVE WET TO DRY SLICKED BACK ‘DO

Fresh and contemporary is our kind of style so we are loving this look with the urban street and city chic Ashkar Line collection. First, prime the hair with Kevin Murphy Un.Tangled detangler and leave in conditioner, followed by blowdrying hair restore spray with a large round brush pulling all the hair back off the face. Tie a simple knot at the base of the hair and stitch in to the middle of the origami fold using linen thread from the Kevin Murphy sewing kit. Leave the ends out to exaggerate the fold. Finish with Kevin Murphy’s Un.Dressed and Session.Spray for control and shine.

STYLE NOTE Much like the hair direction of the Ashkar Line show, it was all about simplistically beautiful designs. Elegant and modern, the Ashkar Line runway was all about commitment to a colour – whites on whites marched down the catwalk, followed by cobalts on cobalts and tangerines on… you guessed it, tangerines! Moral of the story here – pick one bold colour, and stick to it!

WHO BEC & BRIDGE

WHERE CARRIAGEWORKS

LEADING MAN ALAN WHITE FOR KMS CALIFORNIA AND PREMA

LOOK TO LOVE RAW, EVOCATIVE, EXOTIC

Says Alan of the classic ‘Bec & Bridge’ girl, “She embodies the ultimate downtown girl meets global nomad. She’s got healthy hair with natural movement, that’s softly hydrated. In other words? Unkempt, yet maintained, and styled in a simple way that is this season’s best accessory unto itself”.The perfect example of this? The ever so chic up do’s that marched down the Carriageworks catwalk. Want to achieve the look? Alan’s first tip is to attempt not to stretch hair whilst drying, to maintain natural bounce. Once the hair is dry, apply KMS Silk Sheen Polishing Serum to the hair to create a soft silky texture, and ensure that you’re paying special attention to the ends (so as to control flyaway’s, and add moisture).

Create a centre part using your fingers and a brush, and then groom into a pony placed on the occipital bone (mid head) – allow some fine hairs to fall loosely below the ponytail and around the temples, before securing with an elastic. On the final pull through of the pony, only pull half through to create a small loop, and pin to secure in place.

STYLE NOTE We’re calling this one bohemian luxe come disco Barberella… all with a seventies feel finishing it off. Unexpected metallics set off the bohemian style that Bec & Bridge do oh so well this season, and have us yearning for this oh so chic look of the moment… Where’s our kimono’s?

WHO WATSON X WATSON

WHERE THE RUNWAY

LEADING MAN PHILIP BARWICK FOR REDKEN

LOOK TO LOVE LOOSE TEXTURED WAVES, WORN WITH CONFIDENCE.

To recreate this enviable and effortless ‘do, use your fingers to lightly blow dry and toss the hair enabling it to maintain its natural movement. Starting at the ends and working up, brush the hair with a padded styling brush and then divide hair into 3 sections and curl the mid-lengths around the barrel keeping the last two inches straight. Curl the front sections around the face. Run you fingers through to separate and create loose, natural-looking waves. Finish with windblown Redken 05 Dry Finishing Spray to create weightless volume and airy, textured, windswept effect.

STYLE NOTE  Layer upon layers of style! Quite often (and this is by no means a bad thing) layering brings with it those unavoidable ‘woke up like this’, comfort over couture vibes – again, by no stretch a bad thing, however it’s so refreshing to see layering done differently. Watson X Watson have done this perfectly in their collection, incorporating a little prep – that’s right, think layering gone to finishing school. A+ from us!

WHO BY JOHNNY

WHERE THE THEATRE

LEADING LADY RENYA XYDIS FOR WELLA

LOOK TO LOVE TWISTED PONY

Styling superstar Renya drew inspiration from the collection. “We took inspiration from By Johnny’s collection, incorporating structure to ensure the women were portrayed as strong.”

To achieve this strong and sleek look, Wella’s SP LuveOil Reconstructive Elixir is your key product. Apply a little though the ends of the hair and blow dry straight before using a hot iron to smooth the ends. Apply a touch more to the ends for optimal nourishing and smoothening effect.

STYLE NOTE  Geometric goddesses marched down the runway at By Johnny, with basic shapes taking centre stage and breathing new life into classically shaped garments. Bold, contrasting colours accentuated the look and have us itching to break out our inner shapeshifter.

WHO MACGRAW

WHERE THE BOX

LEADING MAN BENNI TOGNINI FOR GOLDWELL

LOOK TO LOVE LOW MAINTENANCE, MODERN DAY MUSE

The brief given to Benni Tognini was for the hair to be kept fuss-free and wearable, with an image of a little farm girl transformed into a modern day woman. This look is all about the volume!

Start by blow drying the hair into a full, voluminous style with a centre part and use Goldwell StyleSign Double Boost at the roots for enhanced thickness and body whilst providing protection against heat damage. Work Goldwell StyleSign Naturally Full through the ends of the hair for an extra volume boost and amped texture.

STYLE NOTE As was the case with many a runway at MBFWA, monochrome ruled supreme – however Macgraw’s integration of playful patterns into this theme ensured that their collection was perfect measure of cute and classy.

WHO AJE

WHERE CARRIAGEWORKS

LEADING MAN STYLE BY DALE DELAPORTE AND COLOUR BY KATE MCQUITTY FOR GOLDWELL

LOOK TO LOVE ELEGANT AND ECLECTIC, WITH A PONY TIED DOWN LOW

“The Aje girl is strong, effortlessly chic, and loves a minimal beauty look to let the outfits speak for themselves. She still has that subtle rebellious edge with those coloured ends, but that face framing shape and minimal movement in the hair ties in solidly with the collection and the designer’s aesthetic,” said Dale Delaporte.

Crushin’ hard on this perfect pony? The top tip for recreating this look at home is to apply Goldwell’s StyleSign Power Whip evenly throughout the hair and blast dry to 90% directing front hairline toward the face when drying. This will provide fullness and hold whilst protecting your hair against heat and environmental damage…we’ll take two, please!

STYLE NOTE In a perfectly executed homage to seventies glamour, the team at Aje matched their reverse ombré pony’s with the ultimate in fluted sleeves for this look. Part Woodstock rock-chick, part English country maiden – we’re seriously loving this sleeve!

WHO GARY BIGENI

WHERE THE RUNWAY

LEADING MAN RICHARD KAVANGAH FOR REDKEN

LOOK TO LOVE EFFORTLESSLY COOL, CALM, COLLECTED AND CENTRED

“The fresh, youthful look that I created is clean, natural and effortlessly cool,” described Richard Kavangah.

To achieve this effortless look apply Redken Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine to the mid-lengths and ends of clean hair to create smoothness and shine. Create a middle part and blow-dry the hair with a pure bristle brush. Using a large curling iron, wrap hair around the mid-shaft in sections and hold for a few seconds to create a soft bend, then let the hair fall naturally.

STYLE NOTE Having the blues ain’t such a bad thing, especially when you carry it as well as the models walking down the catwalk for Gary Bigeni! That’s right, you guessed it – blue was the hue of the season, be it navy or powder or anything in between.

WHO SERPENT & THE SWAN

WHERE ST PETERS

LEADING MAN KOH TANYAWANICHAPONG FOR O&M

LOOK TO LOVE FRESH AND EFFORTLESSLY SLICKED BACK STYLE

Hair at Serpent & The Swan found its inspiration in the clean lines, modern fabrics and neutral tones of the collection… as well as the androgynous feel of the brand.

Koh Tanyawanichapong revealed his styling secrets so you can have this runway style at home. Start by prepping the hair with a volume spray, using a round brush to blow dry hair away from the face. Next, layer a generous amount of O&M Project Sukuroi through the mid-lengths to ends of the hair and blow dry again using a round brush to achieve a soft, straight, smooth look. Complete the look by applying some styling cream from the hairline to the mid-lengths of the hair and roughly brush back to create a fresh and imperfectly polished look. Voilà runway hair in no time at all!

STYLE NOTE  The ever fresh daredevils over at Serpent & the Swan keep it ultra sexy for SS/15, with barely there outerwear allowing the sexy lingerie underneath to steal the show – all the while remaining ever so chic. What should you take away from this exciting collection? Let your bra be brazen, and shine through your sheers!
