I think I Cannes…

Thursday, 14th May 2015by culture HQ
It seems as though the entirety of the worldwide fashion pack have packed up and fled to the French Riviera for a myriad of chic events currently taking place along the French coastline… It’s tough for some, huh?

WITH CULTURE HQ CURRENTLY STRUCK DOWN WITH A BAD CASE OF FOMO (FEAR OF MISSING OUT FOR THOSE WHO MISSED THE MEMO), WE’RE DOING WHAT WE DO BEST AND LIVING VICARIOUSLY THROUGH THE RICH AND FAMOUS…

And as they’re currently off enjoying the Cannes Film Festival in their immaculate couture, you’d best believe we’re right there beside them analysing their chignons, coveting their beauty looks and breaking both down in order to recreate that effortlessly chic French style.

Still waiting for your red carpet invite to arrive in the mail? Whilst it may not leave you as sun kissed as the warm French sun, bask in the glow of culturemag.com.au and soak up the glamour as we relive our top hair and beauty moments from Day One of the Festival right here! Look 1: SHINE BRIGHT LIKE A DIAMOND

WITH KARLIE KLOSS

Day One was certainly in keeping with the time honoured tradition of models dominating the Cannes red carpet. Not that we’re complaining… We’ll take our inspiration where we can get it, thank you. Karlie’s effortlessly elegant blonde waves set the tone of what was to come as far as hair’s concerned in 2015 – it’s all about carelessly chic strands this year. Essentially, if you look like you spent hours getting it done – you’ve missed the mark.

As for any make-up tips you can take from the supermodels look? Well, you know that old rule your mother told you about never matching your face to your outfit? Well, you can forget all about that. That’s right, throw out the rulebook and embrace coordination – Karlie’s frosted pastel eyelids were the perfectly toned down match to her dress (or was it a jumpsuit? Toga, perhaps?). Matchy mtachy has never looked so good…

Look 2: A PERFECT BALANCING ACT

WITH LeÏLA BEKHTI

One cannot quite put into words that carefree allure that the French have managed to totally nail. We can, however, put it into pictures as we’ve done here using Leïla Bekhti as muse. With hair pulled back (remember, one mustn’t appear as if they’ve put in too much effort) into a windswept style, Leïla’s red carpet locks have totally hit the mark in perhaps the most effortless example of style as seen at Cannes thus far.

Okay so she nailed glam nonchelance in the hair department, but did she keep it up in the beauty stakes? Oui! With her pairing of a muted brown eye allowing her pink pout take centre stage it was, once again, a case study in perfectly balanced opposites. Trés magnifique!

LOOK 3: THE EYES HAVE IT

WITH DOUTZEN KROUS

Now this is Cannes, dahlings. Ever so slighty tousled quaff? Check. A white cutaway gown that would leave Brigitte Bardot green with envy? Check. A set of smouldering smoky eyes… You guessed it, check and check. Doutzen kept her blonde locks pulled mostly back for a slightly more polished take on the updo than what was seen previously on the red carpet. And boy, did it work in her favour. With just enough of her mane left out to render the updo a casual sidekick to the dramatic eye as opposed to attention grabbing opponent, it was pure unadulterated old school style from Team Krous on the carpet.

Here at culture HQ, there’s a certain rule of thumb we like to stick by – keep the heavy eyes for after sundown. In this case, however, we’re more than happy to be proven wrong. There’s something so appropriate about this take on the smoky daytime eye, and puts forth a strong case for breaking out the kohl for a midday affair. Is it the nude lip? The relaxed ‘do? Whatever it is, it’s certainly working and strikes the balance between dramatic and daytime.

LOOK 4: SLEEK? TRES MAGNIFIQUE!

WITH JULIANNE MOORE

Well, what can we really even say here that hasn’t been said before? As per usual, Julianne has totally knocked it out of the park with her ever so sleek take on red carpet chic. In a swerve away from looks seen thus far, it was all about slicked back locks and perfectly polished copper strands moulded into an architecturally beautiful ‘do – allowing Julianne’s picture perfect bone structure and immaculate skin to remain centre of attention.

And that skin. Flawless feels like a bit of an understatement here, with Moore’s complexion breakout star of this look. A daytime appropriate eye (sorry, Doutzen – we love your look too!) and nude lip act as perfect supporting acts in this beauty triumph. Do they award Palme d’Ors for red carpet wins? Well if they don’t, they should – and Julianne’s timeless style has our vote.
